TENS of thousands of Australians have joined an online treasure hunt for forgotten bank accounts, insurance policies and share money worth more than $220million.

But this is dwarfed by more than $7billion wallowing in neglected superannuation accounts.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is holding $160million in dormant bank accounts, $45million in unclaimed company shares and $23million in unclaimed life insurance policies.

The consumer information web site is www.fido.asic.gov.au.
